Do we need more or less engineering in enterprise architecture? That will be the theme of my talk at #EABPM on June 3rd in London. This talk is a replacement talk I have been asked to do replacing someone who weren't able to come to London. EA has been at a crossroads for a long time. Should we follow the enterprise engineering road towards an enterprise life-cycle oriented discipline for the identification, design, and implementation of enterprises and their continuous evolution (as defined by CIMOSA, and embraced by TOGAF), or should we follow the management consultant road towards strategic impact and execution outcomes using a holistic approach? The answer is not as straightforward as you’d think. In fact, we must find a way to accept that we will always need to be at, or return to, the crossroads. Sometimes we need a heavy dose of engineering with its planning and roadmapping and exploitative ways of working, and sometimes we need almost the opposite, making room for impact- and outcome-driven ways of working. Key messages: * Enterprise architects must use the architect’s elevator all the time, and be comfortable at all flight levels, * Having a holistic approach means being curious about strategy, business, and technology, all the time, * We must embrace enterprise chaos engineering, systems convening, and architecture modernization. Of course, Ksenija (Xenia) Bickova and I will still run our workshop at the conference. https://lnkd.in/g5rM_zcK

🌟 Join us at the Enterprise Architecture & Business Process Management Conference Europe from 3 - 6 June 2024 in London for an insightful session: 🎙️ Session: Embrace the Change with Business Architecture Defining a new enterprise architecture is crucial during corporate mergers and restructuring processes. The target architecture must enable the creation of an efficient and effective organisation without introducing additional bottlenecks. Achieving this objective is complex, especially when starting from scratch. It's even more challenging when blending two different corporate cultures, technology stacks, business models, and industrial growth histories. In every complex context, starting with a definition of the current business architecture is essential to highlight changes and identify the final desired state. This helps understand which components and processes will be most impacted. A winning approach is to isolate the most representative business capabilities from both sides of the merging architectures and work to minimise the impact on existing processes, particularly in the initial stage. This presentation by Martina Babini, Business Architect at YOOX NET-A-PORTER, will focus on how to: Understand architectural priorities and adopt clear guidelines to document the entire process Embrace change without remaining emotionally attached to the status quo Avoid over-enthusiasm and scope creep Support the business in making drastic decisions in line with the company's strategic direction Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable insights into managing change effectively through business architecture. 🌟 Join us for an enlightening session at the Enterprise Architecture & Business Process Management Conference Europe, happening in London from 3 - 6 June 2024. 🎙️ Session: A Journey of an Architect: Signing up for Lifelong Learning 📢 Christian Schröder, Enterprise Architect, Bain & Company We often hear that it's difficult to become an enterprise architect or to define what it actually means. The area of enterprise architecture can seem unclear, with heavy experience required, and the career pathway appearing blurry. Why is it challenging to characterise an enterprise architect? Perhaps it's because viewing enterprise architecture as a holistic enterprise planning discipline involves a vast field of play, with many other types of architects and their interaction levels often mixed up. This session outlines a possible learning path to evolve a career towards a unique set of competencies. It provides perspectives on how to start and grow as an enterprise architect, solving a mix of business and IT-related critical challenges for stakeholders such as COOs, CIOs, and CTOs. The session consists of two parts. The first part frames the enterprise architect role, while the second elaborates on a possible learning path, evolving along a 5-step approach. These steps could be adapted for other architect roles based on the focus of their work (business/IT orientation) and impact/horizon (strategic to operational). Key takeaways: Characterising the role of an enterprise architect (including required skills and work products) Explaining a learning path for enterprise architects (including planning steps, sample activities by maturity stage) Outlining common career paths of architects (from analyst to executive) Don't miss out on this opportunity to gain valuable insights into embarking on a journey of lifelong learning as an architect!
